Western Digital expands its Mobile Storage solutions portfolio with 3D NAND Flash Drives
Mobile phones have evolved at a very high pace. It will continue to change the landscape of mobile technology at even faster pace. While mobile manufacturers are gearing up for new Data-centric applications, 5G network, Artificial Intelligence, etc…, Western Digital has sworn to be their backbone for Storage solutions. In the new era that is about to dawn, Data is the currency and Storage is the bank. Western Digital, with its new portfolio of high performance embedded flash drives, is all set to empower mobiles with top-notch storage solutions.
At a special briefing session today in Bangalore, Western Digital Corp. announced their new portfolio of iNAND® embedded flash drives. These advanced UFS and e.MMC flash drives use Western Digital’s 64-layer 3D NAND technology. The newly announced iNAND® 8521 and iNAND® 7550 embedded flash drives (EFDs) offers performance-oriented data storage solutions for the mobiles of tomorrow. Mobiles phones, in the coming days, are not just smartphones. They will have a lot of intelligence built in. Artificial intelligence is coming to the mobile to your next, sooner than expected. With the performance requisite from applications, it is vital for the storage to be able to store and retrieve data at high speeds.
Gearing up for these demands, Western Digital launched iNAND 8521, an EFD that is a UFS 2.1 interface with WD’s 5th generation of SmartSLC technology driving it. It has high read/write speeds compared to its predecessor iNAND 7232. It can deliver up to MB/s write speed. The 64 layer 3D NAND technology promises less cell interference and more performance. I would be the ideal solution for the most data-intensive flagship mobiles. For the more affordable mobile phones, Western Digital has the iNAND 7550 EFM on its e.MMC interface. This e.MMC 5.1 based EFD can deliver write performance of up 260 MB/s and random read/write performance of 20K IOPS and 15K IOPS respectively. It offers over 135% random read performance using e.MMC command queue mechanism, over its predecessors. Both these new products have capacities up to 256GB. They will be available in 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 and 256 GB capacities. These Flash storage can be expected to be embedded in flagship and budget mobiles next year (2018).
