Vivo V5s launched in India for Rs 18990 – First Impressions, Images and Camera Samples

Vivo, one of India’s the leaders in offline sales channel and also the title sponsor for IPl 2017, has launched Vivo V5s. Vivo V5s is a successor to the hugely popular V5. Given that the V5 is already making a killing in the offline market, I was intrigued to know how the V5 has become better with the V5s. Here is a comparision of specs between the Vivo V5 and the V5s and just for the kicks, I have also added the V5 plus to the table.

So S in V5s stands for more Storage. The official spec sheets say that the battery is 3000 mAh. My test and benchmark apps shows me a 3900 mAh battery. We need to get this finalized. Also the mobile has inherited the design ID from V5 plus. It has the same U-Type antenna lines and that makes the mobile look like the V5 plus. So S also stands for new Style.

The mobile is priced at Rs 18990 and will be available across all leading e-tailers and retailers from 6th May (Matte Black) 20th May ( Crown Gold). If you have been contemplating on buying the V5, you must consider the V5s because it has bigger batter and a beefier storage. But before you jump to any conclusions, here is my first impression.

In the Box

  • Vivo V5s
  • 2 A Charger and micro USB cable
  • Earphones
  • Screen guard film (pre-applied on mobile)
  • Soft back case
  • SIM Pin tool
  • Manuals

Design

The Vivo V5s has a premium look just like the V5 plus because of its metal body. The antenna lines runs above the body rather than through the body. Vivo calls it the U-Type antenna. The metal has a matte finish and adds to the grip. At the back the 13 MP camera is assisted by a single LED flash. The finger print sensor is on the front. It is a capacitive button with a nice metal rim around it.

The power and volume buttons are on the right while the hybrid dual SIM is on the left. The bottom has the micro USB port and speaker grills. The mobile is very slim and sleek to hold.  It is very ergonomic and comfortable to hold and handle. Vivo has basically taken the V5 and put it in the more stylish looking V5 plus’ chasis to make the V5s.

Display

The V5s has a 720p display on a 5.5 inch screen just like the V5. But the V5s has better white levels and contrast levels. The colors are vivid but the white balance still apears to be a bit off.  It has Eye protection mode to make the display yellowish and give a better reading experience. Display is protected by corning gorilla glass and also has a Screen protection film pre-applied. I have nothing to complain, except that a small part of me would have wanted to see a full HD display on the V5s.

Hardware

V5s is powered by the same MediaTek MT6750 processor with 4 GB of RAM like the V5. But the V5s has got a 64 GB of internal storage. It has a fingperprint sensor, FM radio, gyro sensor for VR, magneto sensor for maps along with the other set of usual sensors. The speakers are loud and sounds better than the V5. Vivo V5s  has a high-quality audio subsystem with DAC AK4376. I will reserve my opinion on the hardware performance in my detailed review, coming soon.

Camera

On the outset, if you just see the camera specifications, you may not find much difference between the V5 and the V5s. But having used both the V5 and V5plus, I can say that the V5 camera output suffered from over-exposure and weak dynamic range. The V5 plus had much better image processing and now the V5s has inherited that strength from V5 plus. Check out some of the initial camera sample and I will come up with more detailed camera review on my V5s elaborate review.

Battery

The performance of Battery will be dealt in our final review, but with my first few days with the mobile, I can see that the mobile has double the battery performance of V5. In my PC Mark battery tests, V5 lasted for over 5 hours and V5s lasts for more than 9 hours.

vivo v5s

My knee jerk reaction

I feel that the V5s is a better choice compared to V5. If you have decided to buy a Vivo mobile and thinking about the V5, just stretch a bit and get the V5s. The pricing of the V5s sits between V5 and V5 Plus. If you can’t afford the V5 Plus, go for the V5s. Looking beyond the numbers in the spec sheet, the V5s has better camera processing algorithm, better build quality and even better battery performance. The current market price of the V5 is at Rs 15500 and the V5s is priced 3k more than that. I would suggest the V5s over V5 or the Oppo F1s.
