Strategy Analytics: 1.3 Billion smartphones shipped in 2014
Analyst firm Strategy Analytics has released its report on the smartphone industry for the year 2014. According to the analyst firm, the smartphone industry grew by a healthy 30%, with more and more people moving on from featurephones to smartphones. There were about 1.3 billion smartphones shipped in total, across platforms.
The report revealed a staggering (and yet not really) statistic – out of the 1.3 billion smartphones, a billion of those were running Android. It sounds a big number when read that way, but last year, there were nearly 781 million Android phones shipped last year out of a total 990 million smartphones. Figures below are in million units.
Global smartphone shipments | 2013 | 2014 | % change Year-on-year |
Android | 780.8 | 1042.7 | 33.54 |
iOS | 153.4 | 192.7 | 25.62 |
Windows | 35.8 | 38.8 | 8.38 |
Others | 20 | 9.3 | -53.5 |
Total | 990 | 1283.5 | 29.65 |
Windows Phone continues to lag behind. While the market grew by nearly 30%, Microsoft’s 3 year old effort Strategy Analytics has another neat table to share. Figures below are in %.
Global smartphone marketshare | 2013 | 2014 | % gain Year-on-year |
Android | 78.9 | 81.2 | 2.3 |
iOS | 15.5 | 15.0 | -0.5 |
Windows | 3.6 | 3.0 | -0.6 |
Others | 2.0 | 0.7 | -1.3 |
Total | 100 | 100 |
Android has gained at the expense of every other OS. While that alone may not be truly important, considering the amount of profits Apple alone mops up from the entire smartphone industry, it’s worth noting.
