Sony IMX318 is the new flagship camera sensor for smartphones
With Sony IMX318, the Japanese electronics giant is set to take the Exmor RS™ image sensor for smartphones and other devices to a whole new level. IMX318 is a type 1/2.6 stacked CMOS image sensor with up to 22.5 effective megapixels. This is the industry’s first sensor with built in high speed hybrid autofocus (0.03 seconds), built in 3-axis electronic image stabilization for video. Sony is on track to begin shipments of these new image sensors by May 2016.
Sony IMX318 has unbelievably small 1.0μm unit pixel size and this allows smartphones and tablets to grow much thinner than they are now without any ugly looking camera bump. A new technology that improves light utilization efficiency will help Sony to create camera modules that can excel in low light conditions with as less visual noise as possible. Take a look at these videos uploaded by Sony, created using the new IMX318 sensor:
There was huge increase in the number of brands that opted for the Sony imaging sensors and with the release of IMX318, we should see more brands embrace Sony for camera module. We will be eagerly waiting for the smartphone that comes with this next generation image sensor.
