Sony announces prototype 13.3″ slate with e-ink display
Sometimes, we don’t understand why Sony continues development on a technology that was supposed to be out a decade ago and in fade-out phase today. e-ink is one such technology that is fast fading out for past few months and today Sony has announced a 13.3” A4 sized e-paper prototype that is targeted at students to replace their notebooks. Well, isn’t this what tablets are doing right now?
Sony’s prototype e-paper slate comes with 1600×1200 13.3” e-ink screen that supports stylus to input notes etc. The good thing though is that this device is just 6.8mm thick and weight just 358 grams. There is 4GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot to expand storage. Users can share notes via Wi-Fi and the internal battery can last upto 3 weeks (with Wi-FI off). Sony will start testing the device in second half of 2013 (field trials at three universities in Japan) but the big question for us though is ‘Will this device ever hit retail market?
