Sony announce Z5 Premium, worlds first smartphone with 4K resolution display

Finally, we have a worthy flagship from Sony Mobile Communications to take on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the LG G4. At the IFA 2015, Sony has announced three new smartphones, Xperia Z5, Zperia Z5 Compact and the Xperia Z5 Premium. Z5 Premium is the world’s first smartphone with 4K resolution display. The new Z5 lineup comes with 1/2.3 Exmor RS 23MP sensor and F2.0 G Lens, first completed redesigned smartphone camera module since Xperia Z1. The new module comes with Sony’s interchangeable lens camera technology. Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will see a global launch in the month of October while X5 Premium will launch in November. Z5 and Z5 Premium will also be available in Dual SIM variants. All three Z5 models are powered by Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 chip and have 32GB storage onboard. Xperia Z5 Premium has a 5.5” 4K resolution display, Xperia Z5 has 5.2” FullHD display while the Xperia Z5 Compact has a 4.6” 720p resolution display. The new features for these phones is a new side mounted finger print reader that supports FIDO standard. All three phones come with Android 5.1.1 operating system at launch.

“Smartphones are part of people’s lives” said Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO at Sony Mobile Communications. ”Since users already create, share and enjoy most of their content on the go – we’ve set out to bring Sony’s latest innovations in camera, design and display to ensure the Xperia Z5 series is the best possible lifestyle and entertainment platform.”

Sony Xperia Z5 follows the design language of earlier Z flagship devices and comes with a metal frame and a frosted glass back. As expected, the Z5 is water and dust resistant. Buyers will be able to choose among White, Graphite Black, Gold and Green color options. Z5 Compact on the other hand, will be available in Yellow and Coral, in addition to White and Graphite Black color options. Both the phones come with Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 enabled and 10 minutes of charging using QuickCharge 2.0 certified charger will give up to 5.5 hours of usage. With battery saving mode enabled, users can get 2 days of battery life when the phone is fully charged. Xperia Z5 Premium comes with a huge 3430mAh battery, Z5 has a 2900mAh battery and the Z5 Compact has a 2700mAh battery. We are skeptical about battery life of Z5 Premium due to 4K resolution display and SD810 chip but the Z5 Compact should definitely give amazing battery life.
