SD Association announce new Application Performance rating for SD cards
SD Association has released a new certification class, “Application Performance”. This new class is given to the SD memory card models that meet technical and market requirements to run and store applications on SD cards. Cards certified to meet these requirements will come with new App Performance Class symbol.
The new speicification is part of SD Specification version 5.1. This is a good move from the SD Association as majority of smartphone usage is through applications and it has become essential for users to have memory cards that can allow fast app loading and storing. Android OS and Windows OS allows applications to be moved to SD card to free up precious phone memory. If the memory card is too slow, application loading and data processing goes for a toss resulting in laggy UI and frequent app crashes.
“With its consumer-friendly symbol, App Performance Class eliminates buyers’ frustration with identifying app-running compatibility on their Android devices and microSD memory cards,” said Brian Kumagai, SDA president. “Matching the App Performance Class symbol with your mobile device requirements simplifies the process and continues the SD tradition of matching your memory card to your device.”
The cards that are certified ‘app performance class’ need to meet these conditions:
- Random Read Input-Output access Per Second (IOPS) of 1500
- Write IOPS of 500
- Sustained Sequential performance of 10MB/s.
