Samsung keeps top spot in Chinese smartphone market, Apple struggles

Samsung has retained its position at the top in Chinese mobile phone market, thanks to 12.5 million+ sales in Q1, grabbed 18.5% of market. Apple on the other hand had to swallow another pill as their struggles continued. Such is the competition at the top that Apple was pushed to sixth place even though they sold good 6.1 million units last quarter. Huawei, which sold 8.1 million units came in close second, pushing Lenovo (7.9 million units sold) to third place. Coolpad and ZTE took fourth and fifth places with 7 million and 6.4 million sales respectively. China is considered as world’s biggest mobile phone market and 67.4 million smartphones were sold in Q1 and this accounted for 32% of global smartphone sales. Given the stranglehold by Apple and Samsung in USA and Europe, there has been fierce compeition in Chinese market in recent times and the Chinese brands are indeed making very good gains as they were able to manage majority of sales (Samsung, Apple, LG etc kept aside). From what we see, more than half of the smartphones sold are from local brands.
