Samsung EYECAN+ is Next-Generation Mouse for People with Disabilities

Samsung Electronics announced EYECAN+, second generation mouse that is controlled by eyes, created to help people with disabilities. EYECAN+ allows users to compose and edit documents through simple eye movement. The unit is placed under the TV, at maximum distance of 60cms to 70cms from the subject and does not need users to wear any ‘special’ devices. As of now, there are 18 commands that users can execute (eg: copy, paste, select all, drag-n-drop, scroll, zoom etc) by gestures that mix eye movement with blinking. Compared to EYECAN (first generation device), EYECAN+ has better calibration sensitivity, better user experience.

“EYECAN+ is the result of a voluntary project initiated by our engineers, and reflects their passion and commitment to engage more people in our community,” said SiJeong Cho, Vice President of Community Relations at Samsung Electronics. While Samsung will not commercialize EYECAN+, the company will manufacture a limited quantity to donate to charity organizations. Both the technology and design of EYECAN+ will soon be made open source, and made accessible to companies and organizations that wish to commercialize the eye mouse.
