Samsung announce first eMMC 5.1 chips
Embedded Multimedia Card Memory, popularly known as eMMC is the primary memory format that is used for storage memory in smartphones, tablets etc. This low cost and high performance memory is one of the largest selling memory formats in the world, thanks to the smartphone explosion. Samsung has announced this week that the new eMMC 5.1 specification for NAND flash memory is approved by JEDEC (standards group) and that they have developed industry’s first memory chips based on the new standards.
The new lineup include 64GB, 32GB and 16GB density chip featuring a maximum sequential read speed of 250MB/s and sequential write speed of 125MB/s. The new chip can reach 11,000 IOPS and 13,000 IOPS throughput for random read and write. The new random write throughput is whopping 26 times faster when compared to external microSD card.
eMMC also comes with command queue function that enhances multitasking abilities and this helps much smoother streaming and playback of UHD content. Security side, ‘Security Write Protection’ creates zones so that only designated users can access these secured areas of eMMC.
