PC market continue to grow in India, HP leads

Thanks to the strong festive sale in Q3 2016, Indian PC market recorded 17.3% of growth when compared to Q2 2016. But when compared to 2Q2015, the market registered 22.5% decline. HP took the top spot, followed by Dell and Lenovo. Another major factor in increase in sales is the start of college season.

Almost half of the pre-built PCs sold were consumer class notebooks. Gone are those days when desktops used to rule the country’s shipments. Consumer desktops accounted for just 10.6% of sales. Do note that the report does not include assembled computers where buyers will purchase individual components and built the PC on their own. Commercial notebooks grabbed 21.3% of share and commercial desktops accounted for 23.9% share.

On the whole, market share of desktops fell from 44.5% to 34.5% indicating the huge decline of non-portable PCs. The share of laptops went from 55.5% to 65.5%. If the trend continues, we will see laptops grabbing 3/4th of the market.

Coming to vendor share, HP and Dell combined grabbed more than half of the sales. Both the vendors registered strong growth. Lenovo too registered strong growth but is yet to crack the top two as India remained more loyal to HP and Dell. Acer, the once budget laptop king could only grab 9.9% of share. Apple took fifth spot, thanks to some very good offers on MacBooks during the Amazon/Flipkart sale days.

“IDC anticipates seasonality to impact the consumer market and currency demonetisation adding to the worse; as early indicator illustrates an immediate impact on retail purchase and drop observed in online channel business. However, commercial spending is anticipated to drive PC market momentum owing to the execution of state owned education projects observed across different states” adds Yadav.
