Microsoft releases Windows 10 Mobile minimum specifications

In the ramp up to the launch of Windows 10, we are seeing more information about Windows 10 Mobile as well. These new pieces of information also include the minimum specifications required to run the next version of Windows Phone, now renamed to Windows 10 Mobile.

The new specifications suggest that companies can start with as low as a 800 x 480 pixels resolution display, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. There’s also a pointer that says the rear camera can be of VGA resolution, with the front camera being optional. There’s a few more details that you can sift through, and interestingly, Microsoft also says that even the USB port is optional. This probably has to be a typo, but at the moment, it is what Microsoft is saying.

In so far, Microsoft has restricted the SoC support to ARM only, on Windows Phone. One of the biggest Microsoft partners on desktop, Intel, was left out with its x86 chipsets, but that is changing with Windows 10 Mobile. The new minimum requirements are also being relaxed across the board, which should encourage other OEMs to start launching a healthy number of Windows 10 Mobile phones. It’s also not subtle anymore that Microsoft wants to expand its fight in the entry and lower level segment, despite an ever growing stream of Android phones from Chinese and Indian companies.
