Mediatek announces MT2523, MT8581 and MT7697 chipsets
CES is just round the corner and we are already seeing a deluge of announcements and launches. Mediatek, the Chinese chipset vendor has announced the launch of the MT2523 chipset aimed at wearables.
The headline feature of the Mediatek MT2523 is that the chipset has been specifically designed for wearables. This means that the company has focused more on efficiency rather than raw power, most of which wearables will not require. A 41% reduction in the PCB area, battery backup for more than a week on a single charge and the included GPS chip are some of the main features.
While most of the Android Wear smartwatches have featured the Snapdragon 400 processor, Qualcomm does not have a chipset specifically designed for wearables just yet. The Mediatek MT2523 could attract companies’ interest if it performs just as well, but the MT2523 is not as powerful as the Snapdragon 400.
The MT2523 will be available in the first half of 2016.
MT8581 chipset for media players also announced
The company also announced the MT8581 chipset for media players. Devices using the MT8581 can play 2160p videos, HDR imagery and more.
- H2.65/HEVC and VP9 playback of 3840 x 2160 pixel videos at 60 fps
- MPEG-2, VP8, and VC-1 palyback of 1920 x 1080 pixel videos at 60 fps
The MT8581 will be available in the second half of 2016.
MT7697 chipset for IoT devices
The MT7697 chipset will be available for use in Internet of Things products. There’s support for dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy so IoT devices like smart light bulbs and thermostats can be managed. Other details are not yet known at this time.
The MT7697 will be available in the first half of 2016.
