KitKat takes 2.5pc share, Gingerbread still on 19pc Android devices
note: above marketshare numbers denote % of total share
For last few months, Jellybean has been pulling major chunks of share among Android versions and this month, we get to see the ugliness of fragmentation. Though JellyBean improved its marketshare to 62%, the growth was only by 1.3%. Gingerbread, which came out way back in the year 2010 has managed to hold on to 2nd in market share, with 19% marketshare (down by just 1% from Feb’14).
Major embarrassment for Google though is marketshare of Kitkat. Kitkat now holds mere 2.5% of share, up grom 1.8% in February’14. KitKat is designed specifically to work well on devices with low RAM size and CPU power so that the devices with single/dual cores and with 512MB of RAM need not suffer lack of updates. As you can see in the following pie chart, the combined marketshare of Gingerbread and Icecream sandwich is nearly as much as Jellybean 4.1.x market share. Given that many new (non-flagship devices) announced during CES and during MWC are running JellyBean variant of Android, it may take really really long time for KitKat to hit double digit marketshare.
Coming to screen sizes, hdpi (240 dpi) and xhdpi (320 dpi) on a normal size screen had the lions share and this is a very good sign as more and more users are now opting for phones that come with decent screen quality.
