Jolla Sailfish 2.0 announced with a new UI and third party OS licensing
Jolla, a Nokia breakaway team that has set up a new smartphone company has announced the next big version of its Sailfish operating system. Simply called Sailfish 2.0, this Linux based smartphone operating system brings plenty of user interface changes amongst other things.
Jolla is calling Sailfish 2.0 the biggest update to the OS so far, with “a totally new and visually refreshed user interface, which is fast and easy to use,”, and brings other new stability and performance related improvements. Jolla is still concentrating on improving the multitasking experience, making it extremely seamless to switch between apps and do more things easily.
Sailfish 2.0 also brings improved Android applications support, making the experience of using Android apps better than ever before. It also brings updates to the browser apart from other performance upgrades.
After splitting its mobile business into software and hardware, by creating a new company focused on the hardware side of things, Jolla also announced that it is now ready to and welcomes third party vendors and OEMs to sign up for its smartphone operating system and build phones running Sailfish OS. At the moment, for example, Intex has joined ranks with Jolla.
Jolla will also offer reference platforms to companies based on the popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 200, 600 and 800 processors, helping them build devices faster and start selling them.
