iPad win 2013 global tablet marketshare, Android win OS war
195.4 million tablets were sold in the year 2013. Though Apple won the hardware war, with iPad grappingĀ 36% of market, Apple had to take a beating in OS market as Android grabbed 62% of market. Massive advertising and campaigns didn’t do much good for Microsoft as Windows tablets registered only 2.1% ofĀ marketshare.
“In 2013, tablets became a mainstream phenomenon, with a vast choice of Android-based tablets being within the budget of mainstream consumers while still offering adequate specifications,” said RobertaĀ Cozza, research director at Gartner. “As the Android tablet market becomes highlyĀ commoditized, in 2014, it will be critical for vendors to focus on device experience and meaningful technology and ecosystem value ā beyond just hardware and cost ā to ensure brand loyalty and improved margins.”
While 2012 saw Android tablets gaining some traction in market, 2013 saw them conquering the market. iOS had a 52.8% of marketshare in 2012 and that was reduced to 36% and if the trend continues, we may see iOS marketshare fall into single digit. W.r.t hardware sales, Samsung almost tripled their marketshare and are now at 19.1% of marketshare (up from paltry 7.4% in 2012). Lenovo too nearly doubled their tablet marketshare from 1.9% to 3.3% and given that they now acquired Motorola’s smartphone division, we may see Lenovo make good use of Moto’s expertise in smartphones/tablets get into double digits.
