Intel announces Atom x3, x5 and x7 chipsets for smartphones
Intel has been trying quite a lot to mark itself in the smartphone industry. From the Nokia days when the company partnered to develop a Linux based open source smartphone operating system to the recent Samsung Tizen OS, Intel has tried both the hardware and software routes to make a mark in this industry.
Those efforts may not have yielded any good results so far, but Intel has not yet given up. The company announced three new Atom based chipsets for smartphones at the Mobile World Congress 2015 held in Barcelona, Spain. Intel is bringing these three new chips with built in modems for phones both cheap and costly.
Starting off with the Intel Atom x3, the chipset will have a 64-bit processor, with a built in modem that supports LTE and 3G. There will be support for other connectivity options like Bluetooth, NFC, GPS etc.
The Atom x3 covers three processors – a 1 GHz dual core C3130 processor. It comes with a dual core Mali-400 GPU with support for 3G. The other two processors in the x3 range are C3230RK (1.2GHz) and C3440 (1.4GHz) processors, which will be assisted by Mali-450MP4 and Mali-T720MP2 GPUs, respectively.
Intel Atom x5 and x7
The Intel Atom x5 and x7 cover the mid and high ends respectively. The Atom x5 covers two processors – Z8300 and Z8500. The x7 has an exclusive one processor called the Z8700. All these processors will come with a discrete modem and support for high end graphics. Both these chipsets are expected to be used in Android and Windows devices starting from $120.
