Popular mapping app Here Maps has announced its decision to stop support for Windows 10. The mapping service, earlier a part of Nokia’s Services division has announced this decision in a blog post today.
According to Here Maps, the decision was taking after considering the business costs. The changes in Windows 10 meant that Here Maps would have had to be developed from the ground up for Windows 10. Up until now, Here Maps developers had employed a workaround to keep Here Maps supported for Windows 10. However, this workaround will apparently be ineffective starting June 30, 2016. Here Maps’ Pino Bonetti refrained from mentioning if this additional change that makes their workaround ineffective comes from Windows 10 or Here Maps themselves.
This means the HERE apps will no longer work on devices running Windows 10 mobile after June 30, 2016. To prepare for this change, we have also decided to remove the HERE apps from the Windows 10 store on March 29, 2016.
Additionally, Pino Bonetti also mentions that the Windows Phone 8 version of Here Maps will not be developed further. The developers will continue to issue bug fix updates, but that will be all that will be done going forward.
