Google team up with VMWare to bring Windows apps to Chromebooks
Well, this is interesting and has already sent chill down Microsoft’s spine. Rajen Sheth, Director of Product Management for Chrome has posted an article on Google Enterprise blog about a collaboartion with VMWare to bring traditional Windows applications to Chromebooks.
“Cloud applications allow flexibility, scalability and security and enable a work-anywhere environment, but many of our customers still use traditional desktop applications. Desktop as a Service (DaaS) helps bridge the gap between the cloud and a traditional desktop by allowing you to run your traditional software in the cloud and have applications appear on your Chromebook similarly to how they run today. An example might be your Windows based accounting application.”, said Rajen Sheth.
VMware Horizon DaaS (data as a service) platform is created to deliver Windows desktops and applications as a cloud service to any user, anywhere and be as device independent as possible. Key features of this service are:
- Single platform for managing Windows desktops and apps
- Multi-tenant cloud desktop virtualization platform
- Self-service desktop provisioning and lower costs
- Unlimited scalability across geographies and data centers
- Leading cloud desktop service provider partners (Dell, Fujitsu, NEC, Time Warner Cable and Dimension Data to name a few)
Google’s Chrome OS team made use of this DaaS service to let users of Chromebooks access countless traditional Windows desktop applications (VMware Horizon View 5.3 and Chromebooks as an on-premise service) and will be soon available as an application on Chrome Web Store. To find out more head to this link and get in touch with Chrome OS team.
