Google rolling out Lollipop update to Android One phones in India
Google has begun rolling out the Android Lollipop update to its Android One phones in India. Launched last year, the Android One program has been expanded to two other countries.
In Philippines, Google launched its Android One phones with Android 5.1 Lollipop – a brand new version of Android that fixes quite a few annoyances of 5.0 Lollipop. The Lollipop update was delayed for the Indian trio of Android one devices – the Karbonn Sparkle V, Micromax Canvas A1 and the Spice Dream UNO. Google hasn’t confirmed yet whether these devices will be updated to Android 5.1 or only 5.0, but it shouldn’t be long before we find that out.
A Project Management Director at Google, Caesar Sengupta, posted this on Google+ –
To those with +Android One phones in India, here’s where we are with the over-the-air (OTA) update that will bring Android Lollipop to you soon. We’ve already started rolling out Lollipop to a small number of phones in India. This is a gradual process and so each week we’ll push the OTA update to more phones selected at random (pro-tip: connecting over WiFi will increase your odds). We thank you again for your patience, and please stay tuned for further updates.
For what it’s worth, the 5.1 update will make it to the Nexus and other devices only in and after March. Google will be pushing out the update to Android Open Source Project by next month as well, and the company is calling it a Maintenance Release. This translates into a bug-fix and optimization release, so don’t expect a lot of new features.
