Google Photos will now save space by deleting images you’ve already backed up
Google’s popular photo management utility, Google Photos is going to receive a new update on Android. The update for Google Photos app has two new features. The Google Photos for Android update brings the Free Up Space feature under Settings. Selecting this would ask users to delete those media files that have been already backed up on Google Photos from the device.
“To prevent device copies from being accidentally deleted, we’re asking users to double-confirm their intent during the ‘Free Up Space’ flow,” added Elstone.
Thanks to the update, the app now offers a handy “Assistant” that will free up space on your phone with two taps. And you won’t lose any photos. The app will also notify you if you’re low on storage and give you the option to delete photos and videos that are more than 30 days old which has been already backed up.
On the web, you can opt for the smaller “High quality” setting after photos have been uploaded in “Original quality.” Doing so not only saves space with smaller files, but those files won’t count against the storage cap like the full resolution images do.
If you changed your mind about needing the full-resolution images, you’ll now be able to click a new “Recover Storage” option on the web that will then automatically downgrade your photos for you.
The update is rolling out on Android now and the iOS version should be available soon.
