Five Reasons why Fingerprint sensor cannot be replaced by Face ID unlock
Mobiles with Face Unlock are pretty common across all budget segments. But there are certain mobiles like the ones from Oppo or even the iconic iPhone X have completely replaced Fingerprint sensor based unlock with Face ID.
I have been using mobiles with both the unlock mechanism and still I find myself using the face unlock much lesser than the fingerprint sensor. But I believe that it is totally wrong to rely on just Face ID unlock and here is why:
- The fingerprint sensor is secure and discreet. It is not easy to dupe a mobile with an unauthorized fingerprint. But we have seen reports of Face ID fooled in many cases.
- The fingerprint sensor is convenient to unlock the mobile without any distraction. It is not advisable to use mobile while driving, but if we need to use the mobile while riding a bike, we need to remove the helmet, show mobile the face and then unlock. If we need to pass on the mobile unlocked to a fellow passenger while driving, you need to take your eyes off the road for a few seconds to unlock the mobile and we all know how dangerous this can be.
- In dark places, movie theatres or presentation halls, unlocking the mobile with face unlock can hurt the eyes and also spoil the experience for other near you as the display has to be turned on to light up your face in close range, for the face unlock camera to recognize you.
- In the middle of the night, if you need to check your mobile, again the display brightness could cause strain, stress, and pain in the eyes. This could disturb the sleep and general health.
- The fingerprint sensor is reliable, fast, secure, discrete and most importantly accurate! The accuracy rate of fingerprint sensors even on the cheapest mobile phone is close to 100%, but even to get around 90% accuracy you need an expensive mobile.
It is not all about the future of tech, but it is mostly about the ease of use and usability that the fingerprint sensor always wins over the face unlock sensor on any mobile. So when you choose a mobile, give importance to the trusted old friend, the fingerprint sensor and don’t just rely on face unlock!
