First Project Ara prototype announced, headed to Puerto Rico
Google has announced its first ever Project Ara prototype for the public, and it’s headed to Puerto Rico in the form of limited testing. The Moutain View based company’s first modular smartphone prototype is called Spiral 2.
Project Ara is an ambitious new smartphone program that Google had talked about last year. Since then, the company has been working on diligently to make it a reality. The Spiral 2 is the beginning of realizing that reality. It’s still a long way to go = the Spiral 2 won’t be shipping until the second half of this year, and when it does, it’s currently limited only to Puerto Rico. The software isn’t ready yet to run the device either, so that will take some time as well.
Although the launch of the testing phase itself is far away, Google has divulged some details of the Spiral 2 specs. It will come with a HD display, a 5 MP camera, dual application processors Marvell PXA1928 and NVIDIA Tegra K1. There will be Wi-Fi, dual band 3G, a microUSB port and a speaker, too. At the launch, Google showed off the Spiral 2 with a 450 mAh battery, but hopefully it’s not the actual capacity the device will ship with.
