Dell’s Skylake XPS 13 ships with Ubuntu

Dell XPS 13Dell is updating its “Project Sputnik” line of laptops which are shipped with Ubuntu Linux instead of Widows. The new Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition is an Ubuntu-powered version of the XPS 13 laptop powered by Intel Skylake processor. Dell is also offering Ubuntu versions of its Precision laptops.

The XPS 13 Developer Edition comes with three new i7 configurations and a i5 configuration is coming out soon.

  • i7 with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, QHD+T (3200 by 1800) display, Intel 8260 Wireless
  • i7 with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, QHD+T (3200 by 1800) display, Intel 8260 Wireless
  • i7 with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, QHD+T (3200 by 1800) display, Intel 8260 Wireless
  • i5 with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, FHD+T (1920 by 1080) display

If you were looking for a budget-oriented device, you will be disappointed. The cheapest XPS 13 Developer Edition that the XPS 13 Developer Edition starts at $1,550 while the new Linux-based Precision mobile workstations will set you back upwards of $1,000.

The notebooks will come pre-installed with Ubuntu 14.04. Dell plans to update to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which will be released in April. Dell does not have an exact date for when factory images based on the newer version of Ubuntu will be available.
