Cyanogen ends partnership with OnePlus

Cyanogen Inc, the makers of the closed-source Cyanogen OS has ended its partnership with Chinese startup OnePlus. After a tiff over exclusivity agreement it entered in to with an Indian OEM, Cyanogen and OnePlus had a rough four months before it caused the cessation of the partnership.

OnePlus launched its first smartphone last year, called simply One. The launched was preceded by extremely high levels of hype and this was Cyanogen’s first truly hyped launched after the lukewarm reception for the Oppo N1. The OnePlus One offered high end specs, coupled with some exclusive features and Cyanogen OS. This was supposed to be one of the big partnerships to look forward to, but with multiple missteps from OnePlus’s side, the One never really sold as well as it was hyped up. This was mostly OnePlus’ doing and had nothing to do with the (overwhelming) demand for the phone itself.

The OnePlus One will continue to get support from Cyanogen Inc for the promised two-two and a half year period, but going forward, we won’t be seeing any device from OnePlus running Cyanogen OS.
