Q12015 : Samsung keep smartphone leader crown in India, Intex is on the rise
Counterpoint Research has released mobile phone and smartphone sales figures for Indian market for first quarter of 2015. Samsung has managed to stay at the top of both the lists while Micromax stayed in runner up spot though negative growth was recorded. Intex and Lenovo were on the rise and Intex is set to take on Micromax for #2 spot.
Overall mobile phone market in India declined by 3% YoY and 15% QoQ. Every top 5 manufacturer except Micromax registered positive growth QoQ while Samsung and Micromax registered negative growth YoY. Microsoft, thanks to strong Lumia sales in low end registered 20% growth. Lenovo registered biggest gain, thanks to Motorola acquisition and strong sales of A6000 and a7000 smartphones.
Coming to handset sales (smartphones + feature phones), Micromax and Microsoft lost market share. Samsung, Intex and Lava registered growth. Intex is well set to take the #3 spot from Microsoft and there is a possibility of Microsoft demoted further to #5.
India has remained third largest smartphone market in the world, behind China and USA. As of now, smartphone shipments accounted for 37% of total handset shipments and given that more and more OEMs started shipping sub-5k smartphones, we expect smartphones to overtake feature phones by end of the year. Among 4G smartphone sales, Xiaomi took the lead this quarter, thanks to strong Mi Note 4G and Redmi 2 4G sales.
