Apple announces CarPlay, new voice/media interface for cars
Apple has today announced that they are collaborating with major auto manufacturers to roll out CarPlay, new product from Apple that integrates iOS in car (interface between car’s audio/video system and iPhone). Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are going to premier CarPlay technologies in their devices. Using CarPlay, users can make calls, use navigation, check messages in voice interaction mode. These supported cars will come with a voice control button on the steering wheel using which users can initiate CarPlay commands. BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp are the road car makers that are going to release CarPlay supported models in the future.
“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”
As expected, Siri will be the voice assistant for CarPlay that helps perform various tasks. CarPlay is available as an update to iOS 7 OS and works with iPhones that comes with lightning connector port (iPhone 5S, 5C and iPhone 5).
