Android Auto live for Android Lollipop users, requires a separate Pioneer head unit
Search giant Google has announced that Android Auto, its ambitious new project aimed to bring Android to automobiles, is now live for users. If you have a device running Android 5.0 Lollipop and have a separate Pioneer head unit, you can go ahead and try it right now.
Google has also released the official Android Auto app on the Play Store, allowing you to control navigation using your voice commands, sketching out new routes and stream music if you aren’t distracted already. To do this, you will have to plug in your Android 5.0 Lollipop phone into your car’s stereo using a USB cable and pair it with one of the three head units released by Pioneer.
Pioneer released three head units ranging from $700 to $1400, all of which come with a 7 inch display and support for CDs and DVDs. There is an accompanying Auto app you will have to use, which provides the following features:
- Navigation with Google Maps – Free turn-by-turn navigation with lane guidance, live traffic conditions, points of interest, and more
- Hands-free phone and messaging – Make calls and send messages without taking your hands off the wheel
- Info and assistance – Get weather, traffic, commute information and more organized into simple cards
- Bring your music – Listen to your music and playlists in the car with your built-in stereo system
You can download the Android Auto app from Play Store here for free.
