Android 5.1 Lollipop is shipping with Android One phones in Indonesia
Google had released Android 5.0 Lollipop only 3 months back and it’s being used by less than 2% of the Android users out there. Even so, Google is going to release a new update soon, hopefully fixing some important annoyances that Android 5.0 introduced.
The guys at Android Police got hold of news bits and server log impressions that led to Android 5.1 Lollipop. The first one is sourced from Indonesia, where Google has just launched its Android One brand of affordable, stock Android devices. These Android One phones are shipping with the 5.1 update right out of the box, which is nice to see.
The second bit is sourced from their own server logs, identifying possible 5.1 Lollipop builds for Nexus 5, 6 and 9. There is no definitive changelog out there yet, but expect the return of the Silent mode again. Android Police also spotted Project Volta, finally, which is nice to see.
Google probably still hasn’t fixed the nasty memory leak bug yet, which is a bit annoying to think of. Either way, if you have a Nexus device, you should be on the lookout for this update. It could come sooner than you think.
Update: The Android 5.1 Lollipop update is now officially official.
