Asus Zenfone brand name – banned name?
Asus is one tech company which has a huge respect among the tech community. It is known for their engineering values and drive to innovate. In past, Asus mobile products have has issues due to pricing, availability, time to market, usability issues and evening launch timings. But in the past year or two, Asus has been trying hard to amend path and set thing in the right direction. Just when things were falling in the right place for Asus, a roadblock hits them, in the name of Lawsuit.
Asus is restricted from selling its product under the brand name “Zen” in India. Asus mobiles are Zenfones and Laptops are Zenbook and their mobile skin is called Zen UI. Apparently, there is a small homegrown company called Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd which sells mobiles under brand name Zen which they have trademarked. They claim that Asus is using their name and hitchhiking on the fame of their brand name.
I have personally never heard of this brand. Frankly, I would have never known about this company or its brand name, if they have not filed the lawsuit. It is also a word of caution to the consumers to check for the manufacturer before buying the mobile. Check it is from Asus if you are picking up something from a retailer.
But the law has to be respected and it does not differentiate based on the size of the company. Delhi High Court has passed the order restricting Asus from selling the mobiles with the name Zen on them. Also, they may not be allowed to use the Zen UI name for their skin. The sale of Zenbooks may not be affected by this order.
Official Statement from ASUS
The ASUS legal team is currently working with the Delhi High Court in India to resolve the Zen Mobiles and ZenFone trademark lawsuit. The supply of ASUS smartphones, notebooks, and other products, as well as technical support and after-sales service for all ASUS products, remain unchanged for all consumers.
Asus India
Asus is all set to launch Zenfone 6 in India and this order has come in for Asus at an unfortunate timing. I hope things are resolved quickly and we get to see the Zenfone starting to roll again in India.
